Canada Science and Technology Museum


What makes a car "Canadian"? Visitors to the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa will have the opportunity to consider that question as part of a five-year exhibit launching in June 2010, presented by Toyota Canada Inc. (TCI)

Car enthusiasts will experience the rich history of the Canadian automotive industry through the "In Search of the Canadian Car" exhibition. Visitors will better understand Canada's automotive industrial achievements in this interactive and unique exhibit. Among the Museum's rich collection of vintage automobiles will be the very first 1989 Toyota Corolla that was built and sold in Canada and a first generation 1998 Prius hybrid.

Sharing Canada's rich collections of objects related to transportation, natural resources, communications, space, energy, manufacturing and industry, the Canada Science and Technology Museum is a National Institution that helps Canadians explore the rich connections between science, technology, and culture. 2010 Toyota Highlander and Venza earn Insurance Institute for Highway Safety "Top Safety Pick"


The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has announced that the 2010 Highlander and Venza have each earned "Top Safety Pick" status.

The "Top Safety Pick" is the highest safety designation awarded by the IIHS. To qualify for the award, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of "good" in the IIHS' front, side, rollover, and rear impact tests and be equipped with electronic stability control. The IIHS testing was made more stringent in 2010 with the addition of the rollover test.

To earn a "good" rollover rating, a roof must be able to support the equivalent of four times the vehicle's weight compared with the current federal standard of 1.5. In the IIHS testing, the Highlander roof withstood a force equal to 4.74 times its vehicle weight. The Venza's roof withstood 4.70 times its vehicle weight.

The IIHS is an independent non-profit research and communications organization funded by auto insurance companies.

All Toyota models meet or exceed the safety requirements in North America.

Toyota Canada's Top 10 Environmental Leadership Facts


We thought we'd take a page out of David Letterman's book in honour of Earth Day, and take stock of how we're living up to our environmental commitments with our very own Top 10 list. Our focus on innovation and technology to shape the future of sustainable mobility continues to be a pillar of our organization. Here's a list of Top 10 Environmental Leadership facts and figures about Toyota:

1. In 2009, Toyota and Lexus introduced 11 new products that deliver on the promise of making things better for our customers and the environment. In 2010, Toyota and Lexus have already each introduced a new more fuel efficient model to their respective vehicle line-ups.

2. As of 2009, and each year moving forward during their life cycle, Toyota vehicles save a minimum 7.5 million litres of fuel and 18,000 tonnes of C02 emissions through the use of hybrid technology, improved engine and transmission efficiency, smaller engines and 2-wheel drive options.

3. The Lexus RX 450h - with unsurpassed hybrid power, performance and luxury - produces 295 total system horsepower with the same fuel consumption as the 1.8L Corolla.

4. Toyota Prius and Yaris were named 2010 ecoENERGY award winners by Natural Resources Canada's Office of Energy Efficiency for the 10th and 5th straight years respectively for continuing to set the benchmark for fuel efficiency in their categories.

5. 2010 Toyota Prius received the MotorWeek Drivers' Choice Award for "Best Eco-Friendly Vehicle".

6. Not only are we committed to raising the bar in terms of sustainable mobility for consumers, we're also applying these principles to the manufacturing side of our business. For example our Japanese Tsutsumi plant's extensive use of solar power provides half the electrical energy required to operate the site - one of many ways the plant reduces its carbon footprint.

7. Since Toyota introduced hybrid vehicles in 1997 (in Japan; 2000 in Canada), we have sold over 2 million hybrid vehicles worldwide, more than 47,000 of which have been sold in Canada.

8. This year, we have introduced the production model of the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid vehicle. Five of these vehicles are part of the first Canadian program - to test the all-new Prius Plug-In Hybrid under real-world operating and climate conditions are part of Toyota's global trial.

9. Lexus remains the world's first and most extensive line-up of luxury hybrid vehicles.

Looking ahead, Toyota's strategy is to offer a wider variety of conventional hybrid choices to its customers, as it begins to introduce plug-in hybrids (PHVs) and battery electrics (BEVs) in model year 2012, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCHVs) in 2015 in global markets.

Toyota and Lexus Take Top Honours in Seven Categories in Canadian Black Book's Fifth Annual Best Retained Value Awards


Canadian Black Book (CBB) has released their fifth annual Retained Value Awards, and Toyota and Lexus models have taken the top spot in 7 categories, confirming the trusted quality, reliability and exceptionally high retained value of these vehicles.

The 2010 CBB Retained Value Award Toyota and Lexus winners were named in the following categories:

- Sub-compact: Toyota Yaris

- Full-size car: Toyota Avalon

- Entry luxury car: Lexus IS Series

- Compact SUV: Toyota RAV4

- Full-size SUV: Toyota Sequoia (tie)

-Small pick-up: Toyota Tacoma

-Large pick-up: Toyota Tundra

"Given Toyota's recent media attention this outcome may be a surprise to some. So far their values remain stable and that is a strong indicator of the public's trust in Toyota the brand," remarked Larry Shred, executive vice president of Canadian Black Book. "What the public wants is value for their money, and these are some of the top companies deliverying high value," continued Mr. Shred.

This year the award examines 2006 models, and winners have been chosen in 17 segments. The awards are determined from actual value retained from MSRP, measured over a 4 year period.

CBB initiated the awards to help consumers identify which vehicles retain the highest percentage of their original value. Although strong retained value performance is not a guarantee of future strength, it is a strong indicator for how a vehicle should perform in the future. For the consumer, selecting a vehicle with a lower depreciation rate will reduce their overall cost-of-ownership.

Toyota Reveals the Redesigned 2011 Avalon


Toyota introduced the boldly redesigned 2011 Avalon at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show. Evoking a time when travel was sophisticated, elegant and comfortable, the new Avalon possesses a distinctive new exterior style while offering a restyled interior rich with premium touch points and practical new technologies.

"Discerning drivers know that the Avalon is a symbol of fine craftsmanship, and has long been sough after for its well-appointed materials and spacious cabin," said Warren Orton, Director at Toyota Canada. "The new 2011 model adds even more style and features that elevate the driving experience."

In addition to its mor substantial look and expressive new lines, infusion of comfort and safety advancements, the 2011 enriches the driving experience with a trove of upgraded equipment and technology, including:

- 660-watt JBL premium synthesis audio system
- 12-speakers and a 12-channel digital amplifier
-Audio music streaming
- XM satellite radio (subscription required)
- USB and 1/8-inch auxiliary connections for audio devices

The 2011 Avalon is powered by a 24-valve, double-overhead cam 3.5 liter V6 engine that produces 268 horsepower at 6,200 rpm. The engine is equipped with the latest dual VVT-i electronic valve-control mechanism that provides a broader powerband, while requiring less fuel and generating fewer emissions. It is mated to a multi-mode six-speed automatic transmission.

The redesigned 2011 Avalon will begin arriving at Toyota dealerships in March 2010.

Toyota in Canada reaches out to help Haiti following earthquake


Toyota Canada Inc. (TCI) and Toyota Financial Services (TFS) donate $35,000 to Canadian Red Cross. Both companies will also match individual employee contributions.

Adding local support to a global relief effort, Toyota Canada Inc. (through the Toyota Canada Foundation) and Toyota Financial Services today committed $35,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to help those in need following the earthquake that devastated Haiti January 12th.

In parallel with the Government of Canada's program to match individual donations, both companies will also match individual employee donations dollar for dollar.

"Canadians are quick to open their hearts and wallets when disaster strikes. This is a value that we hold dear as citizens of this country and that's why we are acting so quickly to do what we can do help with the Haitian earthquake relief effort," explained Mr. Yoichi Tomihara, President & CEO Toyota Canada Inc. "Many of our Toyota and Lexus customers and associates have been very generous in contributing to the relief effort, and today's donation and matching program is a way that we can recognize that and lend our support as well."

"Canada has a large Haitian community and this is a way that we can support the community at this difficult time," added Larry Baldesarra, President of Toyota Financial Services. "Our thoughts are with those in Haiti - and the many Canadians who have family and friends there."

The Toyota Canada Foundation, which organizes Toyota's corporate social responsibility activities and co-ordinates contributions, has pledged $25,000 to the Canadian Red Cross.

Toyota Financial Services is contributing an additional $10,000.

2010 Yaris and Prius named ecoENERGY award winners for best-in-class fuel-efficiency


Aside from both being Toyota products, the Prius and Yaris have something else in common: both of won the ecoENERGY award for best-in-class fuel efficiency every year since they were introduced to the Canadian driving public. That makes 10 straight for the innovative Prius hybrid, originally introduced in 2001; and five for the fun, urban-friendly Yaris.

Natural Resources Canada's Office of Energy Efficiency awards only confirm what Canadian drivers already know: these two Toyota models continue to set the benchmark for fuel efficiency in their catagories, while satisfying the needs of Canadians for a "more powerful, less fuel" driving experience.

"Canadian drivers want fun and versatile vehicles that deliver more power, less fuel and no compromise, and the Toyota Prius and Toyota Yaris are two vehicles that have repeatedly demonstrated their abilities to do just that," said Stephen Beatty, Managing Director at Toyota Canada Inc.

The Prius has won the ecoENERGY award for most fuel efficient midsize model since it was introduced in 2001. In fact, with a combined city/highway rating of just 3.8L/100 km, the Prius is the most fuel-efficient mass-produced vehicle on the road today. The 2010 Prius - the third generation of the best-selling hybrid on the planet - is the product of more than 1,000 new patients, and is packed with innovative features that deliver even greater efficiency, versatility, safety, drivability, power and performance. The 2010 Prius use 61% less fuel than the average 2010 midsize vehicle. That translates into about 1,180 L less fuel per year, saving Prius drivers around $1,180 and helping them avoid 2.7 tonnes of C02 emissions each year.*

The Yaris has owned the most fuel efficient subcompact category since its introduction to Canada in the 2006 model year. Gushing attitude and energetic performance, the Yaris is a perennial favourite with Canadian drivers. And with a combined city/highway fuel efficiency of just 6.3L/100 km, the manual transmission 2010 Yaris uses 36% less fuel than the average 2010 subcompact vehicle. That translates into about 700 L less fuel per year, saving Yaris drivers around $700 and helping them avoid 1.6 tonnes of C02 emissions annually.*

"When Canadian drivers shop for a new vehicle, they rely on information like the ecoENERGY fuel efficiency ratings to make smart choices," said Beatty. "Canadians can be assured that, with Prius and Yaris, they will spend less time and money at the gas pumps."

Toyota's Ontario Operation To Boost RAV4 Production In Spring 2010


Over 800 to be hired, second shift started

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. (TMMC) will add a second shift to build more RAV4s at its Woodstock, Ontario facility in March 2010. TMMC, which also builds the Corolla, Matrix, and the Lexus RX350, will add more than 800 jobs and increase RAV4 production to 150,000 vehicles. Hiring begins this month.

Production of the RAV4 SUV began in November 2008 with one-shift and 1,200 Team Members. Toyota will now build the majority of RAV4s for the North American market in Ontario.

"Thanks to the high demand for this popular vehicle, we are able to increase production in Woodstock," said Ray Tanguay, president of TMMC. "We are very pleased to be able to continue our growth and provide jobs in the local community. This is a vote of confidence in the RAV4 product, the quality of our suppliers and the capability of our Canadian Team Members. In addition, this move demonstrates Toyota's continued commitment to North American production and to building where we sell."

The additional 800 jobs will boost the total TMMC employment to approximately 6,500. TMMC has manufactured vehicles since November 1988 and has the capacity to build 420,000 units annually.

"I would like to congratulate Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada for this latest investment in the Woodstock, Ontario plant," said the Honourable Tony Clement, Federal Minister of Industry. "This is a strong and tangible recognition of our highly skilled workforce, our competitive business environment and that Ontario is the best place in the world to build cars."

Sandra Pupatello, Minister of Economic Development and Trade for Ontario added, "The increase in RAV4 production means the addition of a second shift in Woodstock, the creation of 800 new jobs, more work for the entire supply chain - and most importantly it means that Toyota has confidence in Ontario's workforce and business climate. We applaud the announcement made today by Toyota, and we congratulate the entire team as they continue to contribute to our province's success."

The 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser delivers more power, less fuel: An upgraded engine and new technologies that continue to prove its off-roading heritage


(TORONTO) - The Toyota FJ Cruiser is the authentic SUV that masters rocks, streams, mud, sand, snow, ice and whatever else stands between you and adventure. FJ's strong roots make it the perfect combination of distinctive, utilitarian style, and impressive off-road performance. For the 2010 model year, the FJ Cruiser adopts an upgraded more powerful and fuel efficient engine, and improved suspension tuning and power steering.

"As with the legendary Land Cruisers that inspired it, the Toyota FJ Cruiser has developed an enthusiastic and loyal following of owners who value maximum capability and utility to help realize their adventures - from deep woods camping and back country skiing to navigating the urban jungle," said Warren Orton, Director at Toyota Canada Inc. The 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser is built around an upgraded 4.0 Litre V6 that delivers up to 259 horsepower and up to 270 lb-ft of torque. The addition of dual variable valve timing with intelligence and other improvements help deliver a 20 horsepower boost over models from previous years, even as Toyota improves the FJ's fuel efficiency by 5 per cent. Heavy-duty engine components such as the starter, battery and alternator ensure the FJ Cruiser is ready to go, even in extreme conditions.

This power is harnassed via a choice of transmissions - a six-speed manual, or a five-speed automatic super electronically controlled transmission both coupled to a part-time four-wheel-drive and a two-speed transfer case.

A well-tuned suspension is enhanced by stabilizer bars and a rear lateral track bar to help tame rough terrain. FJ carries Toyota's key systems and features as a standard equipment, including: Toyota's antilock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and brake assist (BA), Active Front Headrests with whiplash protection, six air bags and more.

Also available for the 2010 model is a brand new colour: Army Green.

The FJ is available in three trim levels:

Preparing your vehicle for winter


A little TLC and planning can keep you going for a long way and a long time

YOU THINK ABOUT GETTING OUT OF BED on a cold winter morning is tough? Try looking at it from your vehicle's perspective!

After sitting all night filled with fluids that thicken as the temperature drops, its cold-depleted battery still has to provide enough power to move the engine's frigid rotating parts in thick oil, while generating a spark at just the right instant to ignite a precisely-metred mixture of fuel and air. Then you expect a near-instant blast of nice warm air from the vents to warm the windshield and yourself. Talk about high expectations!

If you are nice to your vehicle, it can do all these things, reliably, for a long time. But you have to make some effort too. The key lies in preparation. A little time and effort now may save you a lot of time, grief and money later.

Start with the fluids - have you adhered to the specified oil-change schedule? And made sure to use the proper oil? Is the coolant up to spec? Has it been checked and/or replaced according to Toyota's recommendations? The liquid in your cooling system is a mixture of fluids and additives designed to not only resist freezing in the winter, but to optimize heat transfer as it circulates through the system. To ensure it retains all these critical properties it should be changed at specified intervals, as defined in your maintenance schedule.

The hoses that carry the coolant to/from the engine, the belts that operate various pimps and the caps that keep the fluids in place should also be checked thoroughly. It is also a good time to check the windshield washer container to ensure it is filled with a proper mixture to avoid freezing. And to make sure the washer nozzles haven't become blocked.

How about your wipers? Have they been changed since they scraped across that frost and ice last winter? A new set of winter blades designed to withstand the rigours of the coming season won't just make driving easier, they'll make it safer.

While we are on the topic of rubber - be sure to have the seals around the doors checked and lubricated. This will help prevent moisture from accumulating and doors from being frozen shut. And it will provide an opportunity to see if any have been damaged.

The most common problem for motorists in winter is battery failure. The electric current generated by batteries is the result of a chemical reaction and as the temperature drops so does the rate of this reaction. Make sure the battery connections are tight and free of corrosion. Batteries do have a finite life, so it's a good idea to have its output checked before winter to make sure it won't let you down.

The ability of your vehicle to steer, stop and go is entirely dependent on the tires. When you install winter tires, don't wait until that first snowfall or depend on old tires - have a set of new winter tires installed in advance. That also provides an opportunity to have a technician check the brakes to make sure they are equalized and working properly. While under the vehicle the technician can also check for any exhaust leaks that could allow carbon monoxide to enter the interior.

A little TLC and preparation can keep you going for a long way and a long time and it's especially important when you're facing a Canadian winter.

It's the latest social networking craze to hit the Internet - a microblogging platform designed for people to answer the question, "What are you doing today?" in 140 characters or less.

Toyota Canada embraced Twitter (www.twitter.com/toyotacanada) for the purpose of developing stronger relationships through a two-way conversation with customers, enthusiasts and innovators. Toyota Canada posts real time 'tweets' about Toyota, Lexus and Scion products, marketing events and social responsibility, environment, innovation and technology updates.

"We want to foster Toyota enthusiasts," says Sandy Di Felice, Director of External Affairs for Toyota Canada. "Through meaningful engagement with followers, we build an understanding of the value, quality, safety and community outreach that is Toyota in Canada.

For the same purpose, in March, Toyota launched a YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/toyotacanada123). Toyota also expects to appear on Facebook, Flickr and other social media platforms in the near future.

Don't get stuck this winter


"It doesn't matter how many wheels are driving if none of them has traction."

ONE OF THE GREATEST CONCERNS for many people, when driving in winter, is the prospect of getting stuck. But if you prepare your vehicle properly and apply some common sense and proven techniques to your driving, there's no reason for it to become a problem.

Step one in minimizing your chances of getting stuck is to make sure your vehicle is equipped with proper winter tires - before the snow begins to fly. And although it is by now an old refrain, it's worth repeating here: That means four winter tires, not just two! You need traction for turning and braking as much as you do for accelerating, so you need to maximize the available grip at all four wheels.

Winter tires are now mandatory in Quebec from December 15 through March 15 and other provinces are said to be considering similar regulations. So it pays to get ready early.

Your Toyota dealer can provide you with a variety of tires to choose from. And some dealers will even store your summer tires for you until spring.

Just in case you're tempted to forego the winter tire route because your vehicle is equipped with 4WD or AWD, don't! It doesn't matter how many wheels are driving if none of them has traction. And it's your tires that determine how much traction you have in any given situation.

While they go a long way to ensuring safe and trouble-free winter driving, tires alone won't guarantee that you'll never get stuck. That's where the matters of common sense and technique come in.

For example, don't drive into snow that's deeper than the bottom of your vehicle and expect to get out. Unless it's very light and fluffy, chances are you'll just ride up on top of the snow, like a beached whale, effectively taking the weight off the tires and leaving them with even less traction. In which case, your choices are to shovel the snow out from under the vehicle (whew!) or call for a tow.

The better choice is not to get stuck. If the snow is deeper than your vehicle's ground clearance, wait until its plowed or find another route. In cases where the snow is not that deep but it's very wet or icy, the key is to get the vehicle moving without spinning the tires. Most new Toyota vehicles and many older ones are equipped with Traction Control to help prevent wheelspin.

Scion announces September 2010 arrival in Canada for the youth trend-setting brand

Drivers lookinf for a car that maximizes personal expression while busting style conventions should mark September 2010 on their calendars. That's when the Toyota Scion comes to selected dealer showrooms in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

The All-New 2010 Toyota 4Runner: Innovation Built Upon Heritage


With the 2010 4Runner unveiled at the Barrie, Ontario, Georgian College Auto Show, North America's largest outdoor exhibit of its kind, Toyota continues to build on the tradition started in 1984, marking the launch of the first Toyota 4Runner sport utility vehicle (SUV). That first 4Runner was based on the mechanics of the four-wheel-drive Toyota pickup truck, and combined versatility and go-anywhere ability with comfort and utility. Twenty-five years and four generations later, the 4Runner remains close to its roots while at the same time introducing innovative features and technologies, a combination that has seen more than 100,000 Canadians invest in a 4Runner.

With the same starting price as the 2009 model it replaces, the all-new fifth-generation has been redesigned inside and out to be even more rugged and athletic. 2010 Prius Plug-in Hybrid Debuts at Frankfurt Motor Show


Toyota takes another step forward in hybrid technology with the introduction of the 2010 Prius Plug-in Hybrid (PHV) Concept vehicle, unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Based on the third-generation Prius, the PHV Concept expands Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive technology. Making use of first generation lithium-ion battery technology, the PHV allows electric operation at higher speeds and longer distances than conventional hybrids. When fully charged (and that takes about 90 minutes through a standard electrical outlet), the vehicle can reach an electric-only range of approximately 20 km and achieve highway speeds in electric-only mode. For longer distances, the PHV concept reverts the "hybrid mode" and operates like a regular Prius.

"This is an important next step in the world's evolution of hybrid technology," said Stephen Beatty, Managing Director, Toyota Canada Inc.

Beginning in late 2009, Toyota will ship out a test fleet of 500 Prius PHV vehicles across the world. This program will let Toyota better understand customer expectations for plug-in technology. As well, the program will serve to evaluate the first generation lithium-ion battery's durability, reliability and performance.

"Our goal is not to be first in the market with this technology; it is to ensure that it is the best technology for our customers," said Beatty. "This demonstration program will allow real world experience to create a vehicle that will be accepted and embraced by real drivers."

Feature: Toyota Canada Motor Skills Clinic


Toronto, Ontario - For many people, driving represents freedom of mobility. But for patients at Toronto's Providence Healthcare, a rehabilitation hospital for those with lower limb amputations, strokes, orthopedic surgery or geriatric-related mobility issues, a Toyota Camry that's drained of fuel and never turns a wheel is a critical step in teaching patients how to get around.

The Camry sits in the centre of the Toyota Canada Motor Skills Clinic. The large room contains a variety of surfaces which are, except for some artificial grass, all real and full-size: sidewalks with curbs and wheelchair cut-outs, interlocking bricks, cobbled concrete, two sizes of gravel, asphalt with road markings, and a programmable traffic light. The room can also be dimmed and lit to simulate night-time streets. Opened in 2006 through a $300,000 donation from Toyota Canada, the clinic is believed to be the only one of its type in the country, and is popular with physiotherapists and patients alike, who use it as one of the many tools in the rehabilitation process.

"We'd been working (on it) about 18 months before the opening," said Sandy Di Felice, Toyota Canada's director of external affairs. "When our engineers were working on a series of innovations around ease of mobility, it was around the same time that Providence came to us and said this is the type of facility we need, and the skills we'd like to teach. The fit was absolutely natural." The donation covered the cost to build the clinic and its maintenance for the first year; the Camry was an extra gift when the clinic was finished.

If you're able-bodied, you've probably never even thought about how you get into a car. But those who have lost limbs, had artificial joints installed, or who have lost their mobility due to age not only have to think about it, but usually have to learn a whole new method. And while most people don't think about sidewalk or road surfaces, such variations as gravel or interlocking bricks can be stressful enough for some people with limited mobility that they can actually run the risk of becoming housebound.

"Before we had this space, we would take patients outside to coach them on getting in and out of a car," said Beth Johnson, Providence Healthcare's director of communications. "In the dead of winter, or even in summer with the heat, it can be a challenge - the production of having to get dressed, find the car, bring it around. To have an enclosed space has made a huge difference. We had a patient, a stroke victim, who said that without his confidence from learning, they might not go for lunch or for a coffee with a friend. It can trigger a whole chain of events that can change their whole lifestyle."

As with many rehabilitation hospitals, Providence's physiotherapists would try to teach patients how to get in and out of vehicles by having them "transfer" from their beds or from chairs as if they were getting in and out of a real car. But that doesn't allow patients to deal with door openings, handles, dashes and lifting their feet over the door sills, or help patients who simply can't grasp the concepts from the side of a bed. "Some patients have cognitive issues and they need the visual to understand it," said physiotherapist Julia Filinski. "We have a lot of people with double or single amputations, and their ability to stand isn't great. Building up their confidence is important."

The clinic doesn't actually teach patients how to get back their driving skills - other rehabilitative hospitals in Toronto do that - but it does give them confidence to get in and out of vehicles, no matter what seat they occupy. For Maurice Woods, a former RCMP officer who lost his left leg to complications from diabetes, that left front door is the most important, as he plans to use the techniques learned so that he can get back to driving his Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck once he's fitted with an artificial leg and discharged from the hospital.

"I've already figured out how I'm going to get in, using the transfer method," he said. "Once I get up on the running board, I'll get in and pull myself in. It's just me, the dog and the truck. We went to the cottage all last summer, and that's what I'm waiting for now. (The physiotherapists) give me exercises to strengthen my muscles," he said.

Getting into a chair or onto a bed is relatively easy because they're level, he said, but there's a lot more to getting into a car. "You've got to stand and turn, and you don't have a lot to hold onto. You've got to know where to grab and push. Instead of going in with my left leg and sitting down, I have to turn my butt around and then swing in."

The fact that the clinic is enclosed makes a huge difference, according to the physiotherapists. Although patients have learned on the sidewalks surrounding the facility in the past, they can be hampered by weather, or simply by nervousness or self-consciousness if they think other patients are watching them. The privacy afforded by the room makes a real difference, Filinski said. "It's an enclosed environment. Outside, there are ambulances driving up, people driving up. This is quiet, and the patient feels controlled."

Most patients only require one or two sessions with the vehicle to learn the proper procedures, and family members can come in and learn how to assist in the process. Without being trained themselves, they mean well, but can often make the task more difficult.

When they're not working with the car, patients also gain valuable training in the various road and sidewalk surfaces. "It's all outdoor terrain," said occupational therapist Eva Wong. "When (patients) are in hospital, they're just walking on a level floor. Here, the walker might catch a little more, or going up or down an incline, people are nervous. We take people walking through all the terrain, or in a wheelchair if they'll be using one. They need to know how to manoeuvre a wheelchair up and down curbs and through different techniques. The interlocking brick mimics people's driveways, and they need to know how to walk through it, as a walker might get caught in the cracks. There are traffic lights for people with visual impairment, so we see that they're going to be able to cross the street safely. And there's a privacy issue when doing it outside, because people don't like being watched. It's respect for the patients to do it in a private environment."

Johnson said that since the clinic opened in 2006, more than 700 patients have been through it. "The need was there, and the therapists felt that there were challenges associated with taking patients outside," she said. "The patients need this skill to get home. Once Toyota saw the need, it was an 'easy sell,' when they saw how our patients would benefit from it. We feel fortunate to have the relationship with Toyota."

Real-time control of wheelchairs with brain waves


A new signal processing technology for brain machine interface (BMI) application

Major advantages of the new technology:

- Commands for smooth left and right turns and forward motion of the wheelchair are processed every 125 milliseconds by analyzing brain waves using signal processing technology.

- Brain-wave analysis data are displayed on a screen in real time, giving neuro-feedback to the driver for efficient operation.

- This technology is expected to be useful in the field of rehabilitation, and for physical and psychological support of wheelchair drivers.

The BSI-TOYOTA Collaboration Center (BTCC; Hidenori Kimura, Director), has succeeded in developing a system which utilizes one of the fastest technologies in the world, controlling a wheelchair using brain waves in as little as 125 milliseconds (one millisecond, or ms, is equal to 1/1000 seconds). BTCC was established in 2007 by RIKEN, an independent administrative institution (Ryoji Noyori, President), as a collaborative project with Toyota Motor Corporation (Akio Toyoda, President), Toyota Central R&D Labs, Inc. (Takashi Saito, President), and Genesis Research Institute, Inc. (Kiyoshi Nakanishi, Representative Director of Research). Also collaborating in the research were Andrzej Cichocki, Unit Leader, and Kyuwan Choi, Research Scientist, of BTCC's Noninvasive BMI Unit.

Recently technological developments in the area of brain machine interface (BMI) have received much attention. Such systems allow elderly or handicapped people to interact with the world through signals from their brains, without having to give voice commands.

BTCC's new system fuses RIKEN's blind signal separation(1) and space-time-frequency filtering(2) technology to allow brain-wave analysis in as little as 125 ms, as compared to several seconds required by conventional methods. Brain-wave analysis results are displayed on a panel so quickly that drivers to not sense any delay. The system has the capacity to adjust itself to the characteristics of each individual driver, and thereby is able to improve the efficiency with which it senses the driver's commands. Thus the driver is able to get the system to learn his/her commands (forward/right/left) quickly and efficiently. The new system has succeeded in having drivers correctly give commands to their wheelchairs. An accuracy rate of 95% was achieved, one of the highest in the world.

Plans are underway to utilize this technology in a wide range of applications centered on medicine and nursing care management. R&D under consideration includes increased the number of commands given and developing more efficient dry electrodes. So far the research has centered on brain waves related to imaginary land and foot control. However, through further measurement and analysis it is anticipated that this system may be applied to other types of brain waves generated by various mental states and emotions.

(1) Blind signal separation (BSS) is a technology that separates the noise components and useful signal components from brain signals that can be used to control the wheelchair. It utilizes only on-line-recorded EEG signals.

(2) Space-time-frequency filtering is a technology which extracts space and time patterns and frequency oscillation data from EEG electrodes to discriminate significant features and components which are able to reliably control the wheelchair.

Think you know who's driving Prius hybrids these days? Think again! Kae Shummoogum (Calgary AB): A long-time hybrid vehicle enthusiast and impressed with Toyota's full-hybrid system, Kae has owned a Prius before, as well as a Camry Hybrid and Highlander Hybrid. Toyota's hybrids are not only important to Kae's family but also to his two companies (Gasonic Instruments and EnviroRentals), which provide instruments and monitoring of air quality in buildings and parkades. "We're always worried about the exhaust/emissions from our own vehicles, and the Prius and hybrids are the best ways to ensure we're minimizing those emissions," he says. In addition, Kae was trained by Al Gore to present a version of the former US Vice President's An Inconvenient Truth presentation, and incorporates his own experience with hybrid vehicles, solar energy and wind power during his presentations. Kae is picking up his 2010 Prius from Country Hills Toyota.

Ron Rushbrook (Regina SK): Ron has been a Toyota owner for years, having previously driven a Camry and a RAV4, and is trading in his second generation 2006 Prius on the all-new model. "In my day to day activities, it's important that I be as friendly as I can to the world we are living in," he notes. Ron is also looking forward to the new Prius' more powerful yet more efficient Hybrid Synergy Drive and the revised styling. "And of course, you can't beat Toyota quality," he says. Ron is picking up his 2010 Prius from Taylor Toyota.

Angelo DiCiccio/Young Drivers of Canada (Markham ON): The trusted training company has been teaching Canadians how to drive for more than 30 years, and has just celebrated the graduation of its one millionth student. Angelo is general manager of the company's Greater Toronto Region and the new 2010 Toyota Prius will be his first hybrid. Angelo's job puts him in the car a lot, and he's always concerned about safety and fuel economy - two areas where the Prius excels. Add in Toyota's legendary quality and the Prius is a winner in Angelo's books. "The average in-car instructor will log about 50,000-60,000 kilometres a year, so - without a doubt - reliability and fuel efficiency are key," he notes. Angelo is picking up his 2010 Prius from Markville Toyota.

Jacques Thisdale (Sherbrooke QC): A well known actor, Jacques has long believed that being environmentally responsible is important. He's becoming a first-time hybrid owner after researching the fuel economy, low emissions and other benefits of the full hybrid system used in the Toyota Prius. "The millions of dollars that people spend on gas is money not being directed into our cities, infrastructure and the environment," he says. "The Prius is one way to work towards preventing some of that waste." Jacques is collecting the keys to his 2010 Toyota Prius from Sherbrooke Toyota.

Cory Cook (Yarmouth NS): Cory owns Cooks Dairy, a small independent company starter by his grandfather more than eight decades ago. He likes the organization of the Prius instruments and controls, and is excited about the available navigation system. He's also concerned about the price of gas, and the best-in-class fuel efficiency of the new Prius was a big selling point. This is his first hybrid. "My family has done its best to recycle and so on, but this is a big step for us into more environmentally aware living," he says. Cory is picking up his Prius from Tusket Toyota.

Joe Jacob (Moncton NB): Joe owns a fish processing business and is a car guy and a big fan of hybrids. He has owned Toyotas exclusively since 1990, often buying more than one at a time, and this will be his fourth Prius. He's very keen on the solar-powered cooling system, but for him, fuel efficiency is the bottom line. "I do a lot of short distance driving for my business, and hybrids are great at that," he says. "The Prius will save me money in the long run." Joe is collecting his keys from Acadia Toyota.

Have Your Vehicle Serviced Regularly


A well-maintained vehicle is a safe one. All cars and trucks on Ontario roads must be registered, insured and maintained to meet certain basic safety standards. It is illegal to drive a car or truck in dangerous condition. Keeping your car or truck in good shape will also reduce the amount of fuel it uses and increases the resale value. It also helps to protect the environment.

A well-maintained vehicle will generally start in all weather conditions. The following types of regular maintenance will help keep your vehicle fit and safe:

- check tire pressures and check tires for damage or wear. Replace tires with bumps, bulges, exposed cords and deep cuts.

- check that all lights are working and replace any broken or burned out bulbs.

- check that windshield wipers and blades are working properly. Replace wiper blades that streak the window.

- check, and change if necessary, oil and filter, water in the radiator, windshield washer fluid, brake fluid and battery

- check all hoses for cracks or leaks, and check fan belts for wear or slackness

- have the exhaust system checked if it sounds noisy or rattles

- keep your vehicle clean, inside and out

- keep seat belts clean to prevent dirt and moisture from damaging the mechanism

Remember, a police officer of Ministry of Transportation inspector can examine your vehicle, its equipment and any trailer attached to it, at any time. If the vehicle is found to be unsafe, it may be taken off the road until the problem is fixed. You can be fined if you refuse to allow your vehicle to be inspected, and if your vehicle is then found to be unsafe, your license plates can be taken away.

Chinese-Canadian Consumers Choose Corolla


In a nation-wide poll conducted by AutoNerve Magazine, Chinese-Canadian car enthusiasts have picked the Toyota Corolla as the Best Economy vehicle in the 6th Annual Chinese-Canadian Consumers Car Choice Awards.

Readers of AutoNerve, the only Canadian automotive publication in the Chinese language and reaching more than 1.5 million Chinese speakers across Canada, were invited to vote for the top brand in eight categories. Ballots were also made available in Chinese-Canadian magazines and daily newspapers nationwide as well as downloadable via the AutoNerve website and through on-site entries at the Vancouver International Auto Show.

The 2009 Chinese-Canadian Consumers Car Choice Awards winners are featured in the May/June issue of AutoNerve Magazine, which was launched in 2001 out of Vancouver.

Prius Provides Ride for Delta Cross-Canada Community Cruiser Tour


As part of the Delta Community Cruiser Tour, six Delta Hotels and Resorts employees known as "Community Ambassadors" are taking the new 2010 Toyota Prius across Canada to help build stronger communities through various volunteer and fundraising activities. The tour, using the most fuel-efficient vehicle on the market today, will reach 33 communities in 10 provinces over a 60-day period. Starting June 1st at the Mile Zero marker of the Trans-Canada highway in Victoria, BC, the tour ends 11,000 kilometres later in St. John's, NL on July 30th.

Delta National Ambassador Brianna LePiane will lead the tour, and meet up with Regional Ambassadors in their hometowns to learn about what Delta is doing in local communities. The Ambassadors will work alongside the many charitable organizations and community groups supported by local Delta properties.

The Ambassadors will blog about their experiences as they visit more than 30 communities from coast to coast. Toyota Canada only automaker to crack top 10 in Leger Corporate Reputation Study


Canadians have ranked Toyota 9th overall in Leger Marketing's 5th annual Corporate Reputation Study. Toyota was the only automaker to break into the Top 10 of the survey, which asked Canadians to rate 100 corporations based on their reputations.

2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid Goes NASCAR

NASCAR has long been known as the province of American iron. For half a century, Detroit's mantra was, "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday." These days, though, Detroit's difficulties have it pulling back from all expenses, including racing.

Now, for the first time, a hybrid-electric vehicle will be the pace car at a NASCAR event. It's even from an Asian automaker.

Yep, on Sunday, May 24, a 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid will serve as the pace car for the Coca-Cola 600, a NASCAR Sprint Cup race to be held at the Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. That's good ol' boy country for sure.

The Toyota Camry Hybrid is somewhat American, though. It's built at the Toyota manufacturing facility in Georgetown, Kentucky, and the US is by far its largest market.

Before being approved as the pace car for the upcoming race, the Camry Hybrid had to pass a NASCAR-mandated performance test. To qualify as a pace car at Lowe's Motor Speedway, the vehicle has to reach speeds close to 100 miles per hour from a standing start.

That's to allow it to move out ahead of the racers and slow them down in case of an accident. The pace car has to do this from its stand-by position near the exit of the pit road, and be moving at 100 mph by the time it reaches the exit just a quarter-mile away.

Toyota has been taking part in NASCAR since 2004, when it entered the Camping World Truck Series with its Tundra pickup. It expanded into competition with other cars in 2007, when it fielded Camrys in two NASCAR circuits, the Sprint Cup Series and the Nationwide Series.

The standard (non-NASCAR) 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid is powered by a 187-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder vehicle that gets an EPA estimated combined average of 33 miles per gallon.

Toyota owners buy Canadian - About half of Toyota Canada's sales will be Canadian-built vehicles


In 2009, Toyota Canada expects that about half its sales will be vehicles built right here in Canada, by Canadians.

It is not by accident that Toyota leads the industry in this regard. It is the result of a concerted global effort to build vehicles in the countries and regions where they are sold.

Corolla - the world's best selling Toyota - has been built here, in Cambridge, Ontario, for over 20 years. And Matrix, another top seller, has been produced in Cambridge since 2002 - not just for Canada but for the world.

Not coincidentally, the Lexus RX 350, the best-selling model from Toyota's luxury division, is also built in Cambridge, the only plant outside Japan to manufacture a Lexus vehicle.

Last year, Toyota opened a new plant in Woodstock, Ontario to produce the RAV4 - the company's best-selling utility vehicle.

Not only are these popular models built in Canada, all four have been upgraded in the past year. That factor has contributed to their position as Toyota's best-selling vehicles in this country. It is also a reflection of the company's commitment to enhancing and evolving its cars, SUVs and trucks to deliver the right products for the times.

As further testament to Toyota's reputation for providing its customers with quality vehicles, in February 2009, Canadian Black Book awarded Toyota vehicles with five of the top ten spots in their fourth annual "Best Retained Value" winners among passenger cars and light-trucks under $70,000. Driving Tips: Fuel Efficiency - How fuel-efficient is your foot?


Here are some driving tips that will help you reduce fuel consumption while on the road. By following these simple driving tips you can reduce fuel consumption and help "make things better."

Avoid aggressive driving: Fast accelerating followed by hard braking increases fuel consumption.

Stay within the speed limit and drive at a steady pace: Cruise control is a good way to save fuel on flat highways.

Keep idling to a minimum: If you are going to be stopped for more than 10 seconds, other than in traffic, turn off the engine.

Keep tires properly inflated and aligned: Remember that cold weather reduces air pressure in tires.

Plan ahead: Combine several shorter trips into one single trip to reduce the total distance travelled.

Keep your vehicle properly serviced: A poorly serviced vehicle cannot run at top efficiency.

Corolla Wins Prestigious AJAC award


ANY AWARD based on the cumulative votes of 70 experienced automotive journalists from all across Canada has to carry the weight of authority.

That's why Toyota Canada is so proud that the 2009 Corolla, which is built right here in Canada, in Cambridge, Ontario, was voted Best New Small Car (Under $18,000) by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC).

AJAC's testing and evaluation process is one of the most thorough and objective of its type in the world and consequently the AJAC awards are among the most coveted in the industry.

Each fall, eligible new vehicles are subjected to five days of intense evaluation during AJAC's annual TestFest, held in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario. They are tested back-to-back with their direct competitors under the same conditions, by teams of journalists who earn their livings reviewing vehicles for newspapers, magazines, websites, radio and TV.

The journalists subjectively rate the vehicles on up to 17 separate parameters - everything from driving position and ergonomics to steering and handling capability. And the vehicles are scored objectively on seven more key characteristics that can be directly measured - things like acceleration and braking performance, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

The Corolla was the clear winner in its class and as such became a contender for the overall Canadian Car of the Year award, announced at the Canadian International Auto show in Toronto in February.

Yaris and Prius Honoured with 2009 ecoENERGY awards


Natural Resources Canada's Office of Energy Efficiency has awarded the Toyota Yaris and Toyota Prius the titles of best-in-class for fuel efficiency for their respective segments as part of the Federal Government's 2009 ecoENERGY for Vehicle Awards.

The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Natural Resources, presented the awards to Stephen Beatty, Managing Director, Toyota Canada Inc., as part of an official ceremony at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto. While she was there, Minister Raitt also visited the Toyota booth for a sneak peak at the 2010 Prius.

With fuel consumption ratings of just 4.0 L/100 km city and 4.2 L/100 km highway, the 2009 Toyota Prius is once again Canada's Most Fuel-Efficient Mid-Size Car. And the gas-sipping 2009 Toyota Yaris, with ratings of 6.9 L/100 km city and 5.5 L/100 km highway, (manual transmission) is Canada's Most Fuel-Efficient Sub-Compact for the fourth straight year.

"Canadian drivers have always been energy-smart and environmentally aware, but never more than over the past year as we experienced record-high prices at the pump," notes Stephen Beatty. "When they shop for a new vehicle, consumers rely on information like the ecoENERGY fuel efficiency ratings to make smart choices. That's why winning these awards is such an honour for Toyota."

Canadian Black Book Announces Fourth Annual Best Retained Value Awards


Canadian Black Book has released its fourth annual "Best Retained Value" winners among passenger cars and light-trucks under $70,000. The awards based on data gathered from four-year-old vehicles in this case 2005 models, determines a vehicle's ability to retain value from its original MSRP.

Expanded from Black Book's traditional 'top five' brands named, this year they have chosen top individual models from manufacturers." , "There is greater value to the consumer in identifying specific models that out-perform the pack," said Larry Shred, executive vice president of CBB, adding, "Since the awards measure actual value retained and not a prospective look, consumer confidence in the model is strengthened based on actual performance".

Not only did Toyota place an unprecedented 5 vehicles in the top ten, Toyota also took the overall top spot with the RAV4. "This list also demonstrates the faith buyers place in the Toyota brand and its solid reputation," said Mr. Shred.
