Toyota Answers Questions About The Recalls

Sticking Accelerator Pedal Recall

1. What is the condition that has prompted Toyota to take this action?

In rare instances, there is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may become harder to depress, slower to return or, in the worst case, stuck in a partially depressed motion.

2. Is my car safe to drive until it is fixed?

The condition is rare and generally does not occur suddenly. It seems to occur when the pedal mechanism becomes worn and, in certain conditions, the accelerator pedal may become harder to depress, slower to return or, in the worst case, stuck in a partially depressed motion.

3. What do I do if I experience a sticking accelerator pedal before the modification is available?

The vehicle can be controlled with firm and steady application of the brakes. The brakes should not be pumped repeatedly because it could deplete vacuum assist, requiring stronger brake pedal pressure. The vehicle should be driven to the nearest safe location, the engine shut off and a Toyota dealer contacted for assistance. 4. How will Toyota handle fixing all affected vehicles in a timely manner?

The safety of our customers is our top priority and Toyota has already developed a repair for the affected accelerator pedals and began notifying affected customers requesting that they contact their Toyota dealer to schedule an appointment to have the repair performed. The repair takes approximately one hour to perform. Dealers have received repair parts and have commenced repairing vehicles.

5. Is this campaign related to the issue concerning All-Weather Floor Mats in certain Lexus and Toyota vehicles?

No. They are different campaigns, although some vehicles may be affected by both.

6. Which models are affected by the sticky accelerator pedal recall?

  • 2009-2010 RAV4
  • 2009-2010 Corolla
  • 2009-2010 Matrix
  • 2005-2010 Avalon
  • 2010 Highlander
  • 2007-2010 Tundra
  • Certain 2007-2010 Camry
  • 2008-2010 Sequoia

No Lexus Division or Scion vehicles are affected by these actions. Also not affected are Toyota Prius, Tacoma, Sienna, Venza, Solara, Yaris, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, and select Camry models, including all Camry hybrids.

Toyota All-Weather Floor Mat Advisory

1. What is the issue affecting All-Weather Floor Mats?

Late last year, Toyota Canada initiated a voluntary safety improvement campaign for certain Toyota and Lexus vehicles regarding the potential risk of accelerator pedal entrapment due to an unsecured or incompatible driver's all-weather floor mat. Toyota also initiated a safety campaign for certain Venza vehicles to replace the driver's side genuine Toyota all-weather floor mat in affected vehicles.

2. Which models are affected by the voluntary safety improvement campaign?

The following models are affected:

  • 2007-2010 Camry
  • 2005-2010 Avalon
  • 2004-2009 Prius
  • 2005-2010 Tacoma
  • 2007-2010 ES 350
  • 2007-2010 Tundra
  • 2006-2010 IS Series
  • 2008-2010 Sequoia

The safety campaign to replace the genuine Toyota all-weather floor mat only involves Venza.

3. What is Toyota going to do for customers involved in these campaigns?

Toyota will provide certain vehicle-based improvements to owners of affected vehicles depending on the model. In addition, for the Venza, Toyota will replace the genuine Toyota all-weather floor mat in affected vehicles.

4. What should the owner of a vehicle involve in one of the All-Weather Floor Mat campaigns do?

If you are the owner of an affected Venza vehicle, until the newly designed genuine Toyota driver's side all-weather floor mat for your vehicle is available, Toyota strongly recommends that you take our any genuine Toyota drivers' side all-weather floor mat in the vehicle as soon as possible and not replace it with any other all-weather floor mats.

All customers should always ensure that the correct floor mat for their model vehicle is being used, that it matches the size of the space on the carpet, that it is properly installed and secured, that it is not flipped over with the bottom-side up, and that one floor mat is not stacked over another.

Toyota recommends only using genuine Toyota accessory all-weather floor mats which have been designed specifically for the model in which it is intended to be used. For additional information about floor mats, please visit toyota.ca.

2010 Toyota Prius and Lexus HS 250h Recall

1. What is the problem with the 2010 Toyota Prius and 2010 Lexus HS 250h?

The anti-lock brake system (ABS) in the 2010 model year Prius, in normal operation, engages and disengages rapidly (many times per second) as the control system senses and reacts to tire slippage. Some 2010 model year Prius and 2010 HS 250h owners have reported experiencing inconsistent brake feel momentarily during slow and steady application of brakes on rough or slick road surfaces when the ABS is activated in an effort to maintain tire traction.

2. What does the recall involve?

Toyota dealers will perform a software update for the anti-lock brake system (ABS) in affected Prius vehicles. A running production change was implemented for 2010 Prius last month. A software modification will also be provided for affeted Lexus HS 250h vehicles and in production.

3. Are these vehicles safe to drive until they get the new software update?

The vehicles are safe to drive because pressing firmly on the brake pedal will stop the vehicle.

4. What is Toyota going to do?

Toyota will begin notifying affected Prius owners of this campaign in mid-February and HS 250h owners will be notified shortly thereafter. They will be requested to scehdule an appointment to have the software update performed on their vehicle. New vehicles currently at dealerships will have the software update performed before delivery.

2010 Toyota Camry Recall

1. What is the condition?

On certain 2010 Camry vehicles with a 4-cylinder engine, a power steering pressure hose in the engine compartment may be the incorrect length. There is a possibility that the space between the clamp on the pressure hose and the brake tube may be insufficient and the brake tube may interfere with the clamp and wear. Should this condition continue, a hole may wear in the brake tube and cause brake fluid to possibly leak.

2. What will Toyota do?

Any Toyota dealer will inspect and, if necessary, adjust the space between the brake tube and the power steering pressure hose clamp. Based upon the inspection results, the brake tube may need to be replaced.

3. When will Camry owners with an affected model be notified?

Owners of the involved 2010 Camry vehicles will be notified starting the middle of February to have their vehicle inspected and any necessary adjustments or repairs performed.
