2020 Toyota Corolla vs 2020 Hyundai Elantra

The compact car segment is loaded with stars. These automotive celebrities have gained their coveted status by providing Canadian consumers value and reliability over the years. These efficient affordable cars have been favourites for decades which explains why some of these vehicles are some of the best-selling nameplates in the nation as well as the world. Two such examples are the 2020 Toyota Corolla and the 2020 Hyundai Elantra.

Of all the stars in the category, none shine brighter than the Toyota Corolla. In fact, in nearly 55 years of production, well over 40 million have found new homes. In this time, the Corolla has achieved a near cult-like status among driving enthusiasts and those who place the utmost importance on a worry-free ownership experience. It will have taken Hyundai far fewer years to reach a well-earned vast audience of its own but it’s no Corolla.

Both cars offer roomy and comfortable cabins for up to five passengers. The Elantra provides more usable trunk space but the tables turn in favour of the Corolla with its standard 7-inch touchscreen (compare to 5 inches) and Apple CarPlay, among other amenities. On the safety front, it’s more of the same with Toyota including Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Pre-Collision System and more.

What’s more, as far as driving these compact cars go, Toyota wants to make sure that there’s a Corolla for everyone. Unlike the Hyundai Elantra which can only be powered by a 147-horsepower 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine, the Corolla can be specified with either a 139-horsepower 1.8-litre or a 169-horsepower 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine. To note, the Corolla’s more powerful 2.0-litre consumes an identical amount of fuel as the Hyundai’s when both are equipped with the optional automatic transmissions.

If all-out fuel efficiency is a priority, look no further than the Corolla Hybrid. Thanks to the 1.8-litre 4-cylinder engine and Hybrid Synergy Drive system, the hybrid consumes, on average, as little as 4.4 litres/city and 4.5 litres/highway per 100km of fuel.

The 2020 Toyota Corolla is actually offered in three unique series in the L, S and the Hybrid. There is a Corolla for everyone. Stop by to see for yourself why it will continue to be the best-selling car in the world for years to come.
